The Communications Dimension
1. Applied Communication. The instructor provides students
with multiple opportunities to practice forms of written communication, such as the letter
and memo, and oral communication. The inspiration for these efforts comes from activities,
assignments, or discussions students have had during Bridge Technology modules. Clear
language, intelligent organization, careful use of proper forms, and mechanical and
grammatical correctness should be emphasized. To support the development of fluency in
writing, most of the instructors have developed journal assignments within their
respective content areas. Journals should be read by both technology and communications
instructors, but these writings should not be corrected by the communications instructor.
Other forms of written communication, on the other hand, will be edited by both peers and
instructor, and revised. At the end of the program, students will have a portfolio of
finished documents to use as models of workplace communication.
2. Content Review. As part of their instruction in oral
communication, students will take turns facilitating weekly reviews of class topics. To
prepare for these reviews, they will consult their journal entries, notes, and
instructional materials. The instructors role is to organize and guide these
reviews, acting more as observer than leader. During this review process, students will
create a database of vocabulary words, and the instructor will look for opportunities to
develop "synthesis assignments" that will link the curriculum to the workplace
and its technological applications. For further explanation of the instructors role
in this capacity, see the Weekly Oral Communications module.
3. Synthesis Assignments. The communications instructor
will develop assignments that require students to use what they have learned in one of the
content areas and apply it in a workplace simulation. The instructor will present students
with a workplace problem that requires action. Students will observe, assess the
situation, draw upon principles they have learned, and decide on a course of action. An
outcome of the assignment should be a piece of workplace communication, such as a memo,
letter, or brief report, in which they review the facts of the situation and provide their
assessment,
judgment, and action. The written outcome should be turned
in to both the communications instructor and the instructor in the content area in
question. For an illustration of this type of assignment, see the Safety Memorandum
module.
